Chlorophyllin is
the water soluble, green colored component of chlorophyll. Researchers at the Oregon State University
Linus Pauling Institute have found chlorophyllin to successfully prevent and
treat cancer.
It works by
deactivating an enzyme called ribonucleotide reductase which is needed in the
production of DNA. These findings were
published in the International Journal of Cancer.
The deactivation
of this cellular enzyme is also the objective of a chemotherapeutic drug called
hydroxyurea.
The researchers
at Oregon State University
have found that chlorophyllin is ten times stronger than hydroxyurea. Tests were conducted on colon cancer cells
growing in culture and chlorophyllin almost completely stopped the activity of
this enzyme. Hydroxyurea inhibits this
enzyme once it has been synthesized whereas chlorophyllin has been shown to
actually prevent the production of ribonucleotide reductase.
